What it is

Kapi gets the hiccups by the pond, and every hiccup lets out a bubble. Leo tries holding his breath for him, Rumble tries a very loud beep, and neither one works.

Why it was made this way

The two quick fixes fail and the quiet one works — Nana sits down beside him and hums until Kapi hums along. It closes on the same three lines it opened with, back at the gold pond, so the story lands where a settling child already is.

The story, word for word

Printed here so you can read it aloud without the video — on a bus, in a waiting room, or when the screen has had its hour.

The garden was gold. The sun hung low. Kapi sat by the pond.

Kapi took a slow sip. Something felt funny inside. Hic — pop! A bubble floated up.

Kapi blinked at the bubble. It was round and shiny. It caught the evening light.

"My hiccups make bubbles," said Kapi. He watched it drift away. "Oh my."

Leo ran down the path. His socks did not match. "I can help you!"

"Hold your breath," said Leo. Kapi held it very tight. His cheeks went round. Hic — pop!

Rumble rolled up the path. His little horn was ready. "I can help you!"

"Beep very loud," said Rumble. BEEP! Kapi jumped a little. Hic — pop!

Bubbles filled the whole garden. Round and soft and shiny. They drifted everywhere at once.

Then Nana walked over slowly. She held a small lantern. Her glasses were a little foggy.

"Come sit with me," said Nana. Kapi sat down beside her. The grass was cool and soft.

Nana began to hum. Low and slow and warm. The garden grew very quiet.

The bubbles slowed right down. They floated soft and calm. Nobody chased them now.

Kapi hummed along too. Hmmm, hmmm, hmmm. His chest felt slow and easy.

One last bubble came up. Hic — pop! Then everything was quiet.

The hiccups were all gone. Kapi smiled up at Nana. Leo clapped his hands softly.

The bubbles drifted higher. Up into the gold sky. Everyone watched them go.

The garden was gold. The sun hung low. Kapi sat by the pond.

Leo's Missing Sock

Leo has one yellow sock and cannot find the blue one. He asks Kapi, who offers a bubble. He asks Rumble, who sneezes confetti. He asks Nana, who has a button. The sock turns up on Kapi's head — he had been wearing it as a hat.
